I have been noticing an influx of people asking about VPNs lately. I figure with Hack0si actively trying to get people to use them, I would go ahead and explain them and what they are good for.
First: The actual definition of a VPN
linkA virtual private network (VPN) is a secure way of connecting to a private Local Area Network at a remote location, using the Internet or any unsecure public network to transport the network data packets privately, using encryption. The VPN uses authentication to deny access to unauthorized users, and encryption to prevent unauthorized users from reading the private network packets. The VPN can be used to send any kind of network traffic securely, including voice, video or data.
Ok, so know you know what it is technically. Now the big question comes about:
Why the hell does a VPN apply to botters and why would I pay for it?
Well lets see here. Given what we know, we know that a VPN will mask our IP, encrypt our data, and cost us roughly $10 a month right?
Breaking these things down a bit:
1) A VPN will not stop a banning.** It can't. That's not really what it does. When you log into WoW, you give Blizzard permission to access your computer and any files associated with WoW and them transmit data about said files back to their servers. That is why Warden is as efficient as it is.
What you need to keep in mind as a botter is that we are always trying to be one step ahead of Warden. This does not always work though. Sometimes, we are going to get caught. This is where the handy dandy VPN comes into play.
Say you are botting on Computer A with the IP of 1.1.1.1 and you go ahead and run your VPN. You select a server in lets say China. It now appears as if your computer is running on 192.168.2.2 (Random IP) instead of your 1.1.1.1
How does this help you? Hacking is RAMPANT in WoW. Even with Authenticators, people get hacked in droves every day. Whats the first thing a hacker does? Normally they sell anything that's sell-able, move the gold off your account, and begin using some sort of third-party program to spam trade with.
Now when you get banned for botting, selling gold, or linking animal porn links in game, you now have the ability to run to Blizzard and say "That wasn't me! I can't access my account and I am so upset and stupid" Assuming you aren't the worlds worst actor (I.E. one of the Baldwin Brothers), the GMs will check the IP, see it is foreign, and return your things.
**This is in my personal experience. I have never seen it be able to or have the capability of.
2) Well okay the VPN is nice for another IP, but it seems excessive? Not at all. A VPN protects you as a botter in more ways than one. Another thing you have to think about if you wanna make money in this business is that you are not always going to be moving your gold to up and up people.
Normally, I always tend to work with the same people. However, sometimes I have to move my product through those I dont know. The scary thing about doing this is:
Probably about 80% of accounts used to sell, hold, or market foreign gold are hacked.
Majority of those accounts are acquired through hacked emails, keyloggers via gold sites, or dumbasses stupid enough to use their WoW credentials on a gold site.
With a VPN shielding both your IP, and majority of your transmitted data, it makes it a lot harder to fall victim to these things. That applies to your everyday net use as well. Credit cards, Paypal, etc.
3) Why should I pay for this? Well TBH? Because it's worth it in the long run. A VPN is not required to Bot. All you need is the program and the know how. In the long run though, a VPN can save you a lot of money. The average WoW account is going for roughly $80 - $150 USD atm. I believe a fresh account from a local store is right around $100.
Think of a VPN like health insurance. Have it and hope you don't need it. Thank god you have it when you do need it. Getting an account back easily because it looks hacked is a huge load off my mind when it happens.
A clause to this: You do not always need to buy a VPN service. Sometimes routers have them pre-installed. If you are good with things such as IPsec Networks and are willing to put out the work to set it up, you can use your at home router to provide a mask for your system. WARNING: This is a pain in the ass. I had a tech come out and do mine. Therefore, take those questions elsewhere or into the Off-Topic forum.
